In 1963, Steuben Glass introduced the Poetry in Crystal series comprised of pieces designed for specific poems by noted poets. Each edition was limited to only 11 examples so each one is extremely rare. The magnificent 18" #0005 To a Giraffe is one of the most impressive masterworks in the collection. Designed by Lloyd Atkins as an interpretation of Marianne Moore's poem "To a Giraffe", the solid crystal tusk features two mischievous monkeys peering through the legs of a stately giraffe who, unheeding, reaches up toward leaves engraved above. Properly signed, numbered and in excellent condition and beautifully presented in the original red leather case with red binder along with a special lighted base and black backdrop to further accentuate the display.
In the late 1980's, Steuben Glass introduced the #1126 8" Lion majestically resting on an attractive wood base for a total length of 9 1/2". This regal animal has appeared as a figure of bravery and strength throughout the history of art. Properly signed and in excellent condition.
IIntroduced in 1996, the impressive 8 1/4" high #1178 Regal Lion captures the qualities of courage, power, strength and bravery in an amazing three dimensional masterwork. Blending the unique reflective and refractive qualities of Steuben Glass, a flawless block of crystal is used to create an echoing of the lion's head within the glass. Properly signed and in excellent condition with the attractive walnut base with marble insert.
The extremely rare 8" #5006 Great Koala was only produced for a few years in the late 1960's--early 1970's. Pictured above on the left and next to the #8268 5 3/4" Companion Koala.
In the late 1960's, Steuben Glass produced a wonderful series of Great Animals including the #5008 Great Hippopotamus shown above along side the #8280 Hippo. Since the Great Animals were only available for a few years, they rarely appear on the resale market. The Great Hippo is 9" long, properly signed and in excellent condition--an important piece for any serious Steuben Glass or Hippo collector.
Introduced in 1963, the 14 1/2" #8119 Original Giraffe is one of the tallest Animals produced by Steuben Glass. This elegant design with whimsical face, graceful neck/back and ample tail is far superior to all of the later Giraffe pieces and is the only one to allow into your Steuben Glass Animal collection. Properly signed and in excellent condition.
Designed by James Houston and introduced in 1964, the 7 1/2" #8128 Trumpeting Elephant was produced right up until the closing in 2011 due to its popularity. Properly signed and in excellent condition.
Introduced in 1971, the 5 3/4" #8268 Koala is an all time favorite with Steuben Glass Animal collectors. This classic design features large, round ears and a happy demeanor. Properly signed and in excellent condition.
Introduced in 1972, the 6 5/8" long #8280 Hippopotamus is an important piece for any Steuben Glass Animal collection .Strong and vigorous, the Hippopotamus is not only a speedy swimmer, it can run faster than most joggers--for a short distance. Properly signed and in excellent condition.
Introduced in 1980 and produced for only a few years, the 9" long #8396 Herd of Elephants make a great whimsical display. Each of the three pieces are similar with the trunk in different positions. Properly signed and in excellent condition.
Introduced in 1980, the 6 1/4" long #8400 Hippopotamus was only produced for a few years so it is the least known Steuben Glass Hippo design. Properly signed and in excellent condition.
Introduced in 1983, the 8" long #8481 Original Lion was only offered alone for a few years until it was upgraded with a wood base and marketed at a much higher price by Steuben Glass. This regal design looks just fine by itself!! Properly signed and in excellent condition.
